Since both me and my BF’s hubby have gastritis and esophagitis (and he has duodenitis in addition to the other two), I thought I would give you guys a picture of the lovely diet we will have to follow. I am wallowing in misery thinking about it.
With Gastritis and Esophagitis, you want to follow a Bland and Soft Diet, which is designed to decrease peristalsis and avoid further irritation to the GI Tract. A Bland/Soft diet consists of foods that are easy to digest, are not highly seasoned or spicy and are tender. Fried, greasy foods, highly seasoned/spicy foods and most raw and/or gas-forming vegetables are to be avoided. Alcohol and Caffeine are also avoided along with Aspirin and Aspirin-containing meds such as Excedrin.
Now, for the list of foods to avoid:
Veggies: All raw vegetables in addition to peas, beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, onions, cauliflower, cucumbers, green pepper, corn, turnips and sauerkraut, tomato juice, V-8 juice
Fruits: Dried fruits, berries, figs, citrus fruits, orange juice, pineapple juice, grapefruits
Starches: Whole, coarse grains/cereals, Breads/crackers with seeds, potato chips, fried potatoes, wild rice
Protein:Highly seasoned meats, cured meats, smoked meats, corned beef, luncheon meats, hotdogs, sausage, polish sausage, pepperoni, strong cheeses, peanut butter
Fats/Desserts: Highly seasoned dressings with seeds, pickle relish, all sweets/desserts containing nuts, coconut or citrus fruits or berries, fried pastries, doughnuts
Misc.: Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Colas, Orange Soda, DR.PEPPER, Excedrin), Garlic, BBQ Sauce, Chili Sauce, Chili Powder, Horseradish, Pepper (Red, Black, White), Pickles, Seed Spices, Olives, Popcorn, Nuts, Coconut, Aspirin, Alcoholic Beverages
Do you feel our pain? I love pasta with marinara sauce, pizza, Mexican foods, etc. The spicier it is, generally, the better I like it. And, my beloved Dr.Pepper is on the list. And, how do you eat eggs without black pepper?
Needless to say, I blew my diet tonight with supper. We had breakfast for supper, so I had an omelet with Sausage, Onion and Cheddar Cheese and Fried Potatoes, both of which were seasoned with Black Pepper. And, I drank a glass of Tea, but it was Caffeine free. This is going to be terrible for me. All of my favorite foods are on this list. But, they need to be avoided for less irritation and increased healing.
So, I don’t know about DH, but I am going to need a lot of prayers for compliance!
Blessings!

I don’t know if you have a Trader Joe’s near you, but they have a wonderful grain mixture that is couscous and some other grains. My grandson has some digestive problems and he loves this cooked in some chicken broth. It is very tasty and should be in line with your dietary restrictions. I feel your pain and will keep you in my prayers.

I’ll be the voice of the devil and say that I had gastritis and did not follow a special diet. *ducking tomatoes* I avoided seriously spicy stuff, but other than that… didn’t do a lot about it. I know that yours is worse than mine probably was, but maybe you can do one or two good meals and one tasty meal.
Of course, I am the WORSE patient EVER. Seriously. I quit my Advair for the like 3rd time 2 weeks ago and finally after feeling like I was breathing through a straw this morning, decided it might not have been a good idea.
Now that I think about it, I’m not sure I’d follow any of my advice. LOL!
you have my heart felt sympathy—praying for quick healing so normal eating can resume. It would be extreeeeemly hard for me to follow this regiment.
Oh, yeah, you know my man’s appetite – he definitely needs prayers to follow this diet! He’s already torn up over the quitting dipping thing!
Okay…..I have a question…..what CAN you eat?!?! I will definitely be praying for you and DH….I know it would be very hard for me!
I figure you are going to have to eat like you’ve just had the stomach flu.
You know, like the BRAT diet! At least there are potatoes. without pepper.
Whew.
Lots of salt is the only way I can think!
In response to the pp… we do not have a Trader Joe’s anywhere near us. Oh, how I wish we did. The closest thing is a couple of Whole Foods… each 2 hours away. They do have the bulk grain bins, though and a much wider variety of foods to enjoy. Something to look into!
I’m confused about the peanut butter part. Wow… I didn’t read the entire list. It’s killer!
Whew, that does not sound fun. I would be lost without my Pringles. Here’s praying it will clear up fast!!!!
I have chronic gastritis, and i’m 21. Gay huh? Finally legalized to drink and now i cant! Well, mine is pretty bad and lately i have been getting gerd symptoms, afteer 6 mo. of having this crap.
DO u have chronic? Where did u find the list of foods to avoid?
This is for Jen. Go on Google and type in, “foods to avoid for chronic gastritis.” That’s what I did when I was looking for foods on a bland diet. Good Luck and stay with it. It is worth the effort in feeling better.
Hi to a fellow sufferer – there ought to be a gastritis support group! I’ve had it for 8 years (chronic) and have a flare up at the moment – found Losec (Omeprazole really good for most of that time) – now back on vege juices – carrot plus cabbage or spinach – helps cool things down. I’ve just been looking through the ‘net’ and found About.com with a list of food to eat, things to eat occasionally and food to avoid. Might help. Let me know if you find a cure please.
All the best
hi, suffering from gastritis too. generally how long does it take to recover?
SHORT BUT TO THE POINT;;;
I HAD AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF PRESSURE BUILDING UP [STOMACH& INTESTINES ]I THOUGHT & FELT AS IF MY INTESTINES WERE GETTING RIPPED UP BY ZOMBIES IT WAS HORRIBLE ,I HAD TO WEAR AN ELASTIC BELT 12 INCHES WIDE & WEAR IT WHEN I WOULD WALK TO KEEP THE FEELING OF MY INTESTINES FROM FALLING OUT .FINALLY AFTER SEEING SO MANY DOCTORS & VISITS & TEST FOR BLOOD ,ULTRA SOUND ,SCAN [NOTHING]THEY COULD FIND .. SO I FINALLY HAD A ENDOSCOPY RESULTING IN MILD ESOPHAGITIS & ANTRAL A BIOPSY TO SEE IF I HAVE ANY BACTERIA .ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO I WAS TREATED FOR H -PYLORI ANOTHER HORROR STOREY.IF ANY ONE OUT THERE FEELS SICK DONT GIVE UP & INSIST RUNNING TEST
can someone tell me how long it takes to recover??
You and your husband need to do a detoxification program, take plenty of probiotics, fiber, and eat only whole foods. If certain foods bother you, avoid them, but overall, anything completely natural, unprocessed, and whole should be okay to consume (avoid foods with refined sugar and simple carbohydrates). Some foods you may have to avoid until your detoxifications are finished. Detoxing can be a bit of an effort, but after you do it, your health will benefit greatly and you will avoid illness and disease in the future (given, of course, you continue following a healthy diet). Drink plenty of filtered water, stay away from alcohol, caffeine, and any sodas. Most gastrointestinal issues are caused by poor diet choices, and those in turn affect your overall health in a negative way as well.

i got my esophagitis from swallowing an antibiotic pill that got lodged in my throat. the pill disovled and caused the irritation in my esophagus. my question is, how long has it taken you all to recover? because its such a miserable pain, and i’m with you guys, a lot of my favorite foods are on that list, and i don’t know how much longer i can go on chicken broth, liquids and making sure i chew my food 5000 times….
I feel your pain, I have been suffering with digestive difficulties for nearly a month now. I too, do not know how one can survive indefinitely on chicken broth, etc.
I certainly feel for you. I also have gastritis, duodenitis, high cholorestol, high blood pressure, multiple areas of severe arthritis and emphysema from 42 years of smoking. I was recently healed of 2 bleeding ulcers, and I was in intensive care in our hospital in case they had to do surgery to stop the bleeding. I had a tube through my nose leading down my throat and into my stomach to pump out the blood.
I had oxygen on at 2 liters for my emphysema, with mini nebs every 4 hours. I don’t know what to eat because with my gastritis and duodenitis, I can not have spicy foods or the others you mentioned. With my high cholorestol I can’t have some of those same foods plus others. I am also obese because of my arthritis and emphysema it takes everything out of me just going from one room to another. But, I am in very high spirits because I have God on my side. He is my healer and my strength. I may not be cured in this world but I will be in the next !!! Praise God !! Amen…
I just wanted to let you know I’m praying for you.
In addition to Gastritis, Duodenitis, and Esophagitis, I have GERD, Celiac Disease (so no wheat), Lactose intolerance, and hypoglycemia. And all this before the age of 21 in addition to Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease.
It is very difficult to eat, and I love food,
(when they said no chocolate I wanted to sink into a black hole and never reappear…) but God sustains!
I wrote an article on Lyme Disease… it isn’t about general digestive stuff but it still applies (a lot of the same principles) – concerning how to glorify God amidst trials like this!
And I sure hope you have your eyes set on heaven – man, won’t it be nice to eat everything (Even better foods!) without feeling sick again!!!
